About

New York City-based bassoonist Marty Tung communicates an enduring passion for music through chamber, solo, and orchestral work. Marty recently completed a fellowship with Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect, where they performed a wide variety of chamber music, undertook international and domestic artist residencies, and brought interactive performances to school and community settings across NYC. As a part of Ensemble Connect, Marty worked as a teaching artist at P.S. 130 in Brooklyn. Marty has performed under conductors such as Marin Alsop, JoAnn Falletta, Peter Oundjian, and Leonard Slatkin, and in venues across the United States, Europe, and Australia. During the summers they also participated in engagements at Spoleto Festival USA, the Aspen Music Festival, the National Orchestral Institute, and Brevard Music Center. They were named a semifinalist in the 2025 Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and a two-time winner of the Yale School of Music’s annual chamber music competition.

Marty has played with the Princeton Symphony, the Fort Greene Symphony, and various other Tri-State area ensembles, and they serve as a substitute principal for the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra. In their capacity as a teaching artist, they have supported students through the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program and the Little Orchestra Society. They have been teaching private lessons to all ages and skill levels since 2021.

As a musician, budding composer, and improviser, Marty strives to advocate for contemporary music. They have collaborated with artists including Carolina Noguera, Mike Block, and Levy Lorenzo to premiere new works and arrangements. In 2025 they received a fellowship with Spoleto Festival’s Tell Your Story initiative; for this project they met a “resident narrator” from Charleston, recorded the story of his experiences growing up in the area, and composed a piece for bassoon and tape based on this narrative that premiered as part of the festival. Marty is a founding member of NYC woodwind trio Drift Winds and loves performing with co-founders Anjali Shinde and Matthew Maroon. They also enjoy contributing arrangements and compositions to the group repertoire.

A graduate of Yale College with bachelor's degrees in Music and Humanities, Marty received the Wrexham, Sharp, and Selden awards for performance excellence and contributions to the field of music. Marty holds a Master’s from the Yale School of Music, where they studied with Frank Morelli and provided private lessons to undergraduate bassoonists.

In their spare time, Marty likes to climb rocks, grow plants, and read as many books as possible.
